Early Life and Education

Growing Up in Northern Ireland

Steven Agnew was born in a place called Dundonald. He went to Brooklands Primary School and Grosvenor Grammar School. Later, he studied at Queen's University Belfast. Growing up, Steven saw a lot of political disagreements around him. He learned that politics could be about being against certain groups, but he wanted to find a different way.

Steven Agnew's Political Journey

Joining the Green Party

Steven Agnew joined the Green Party in 2003. This was during a time when many people were protesting against the war in Iraq. He met another Green Party member, John Barry, who helped him see that the Green Party had good ideas for change. Steven believed that caring for the environment, known as environmental justice, was connected to being fair to all people, which is social justice.

Early Elections and Roles

Steven first ran for election in 2007 in Belfast East, but he was not elected. After that, he became a research officer for Brian Wilson, who was elected for the Green Party. In 2009, Steven ran for the European Parliament and helped the Green Party get more votes. He also ran in the UK general elections in 2010, 2015, and 2017 for North Down.

Becoming a Party Leader

In January 2011, Steven Agnew was chosen as the first leader of the Green Party in Northern Ireland. He won a vote against another candidate. Later that year, he successfully won a seat in the 2011 Northern Ireland Assembly election for North Down. This meant he became a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). MLAs are like elected representatives who help make decisions for Northern Ireland.

Stepping Down and New Role

Steven announced in 2018 that he would step down as the Green Party leader. He said he wanted to spend more time with his family. In September 2019, he also resigned from his role as an MLA. After leaving politics, Steven started a new job. He became the head of the Northern Ireland Renewables Industry Group. In this role, he works to support and grow the use of clean, renewable energy in Northern Ireland.
