Stevens Terrace is a special old building located at 73 Windmill Street in a historic part of Sydney called Millers Point. It was built a long time ago, in 1900, and was first used as a fancy place where people could rent rooms, like a guesthouse. Today, it is a home and is protected because of its important history.

A Look Back in Time

Millers Point is one of the oldest areas in Australia where European settlers first arrived. It was a busy place for ships and sea activities.

Stevens Terrace was built in 1900 for the Stevens family. It started as a high-class boarding house, which was a building where people could rent rooms for a short or long time. It might even be the first "walk-up" apartment building in Sydney. A walk-up means it has many floors but no elevator.

Later, in 1982, the NSW Department of Housing started renting out the units in the building.

What Does It Look Like?

Stevens Terrace is a four-storey apartment building. It has nine units, each with two bedrooms. The building has a fancy design from the late Victorian era, called Victorian Italianate style.

You'll notice its central balconies are set back from the main wall. It also has a detailed parapet, which is the low wall along the edge of the roof. The building is made of brick and has a corrugated iron roof. It features iron lace balustrades (fancy railings) and painted wooden window frames. The original wooden stairs inside were later changed to concrete.

The outside of the building is in good condition.

Changes Over Time

Some parts of Stevens Terrace have been updated over the years. A roof was added to the stair hall later on. In 1988, the inside was renovated to meet modern safety rules, especially for the stairs in case of a fire.

Why Is It Important?

Stevens Terrace is considered a very important historical building. It was built in 1900 as a high-class boarding house for the Stevens family. It stands on the spot where an old hotel called "Live & Let Live Hotel" used to be. Many people believe it was the very first walk-up apartment building in Sydney.

The building is part of the Millers Point Conservation Area. This area is special because it's a well-preserved neighborhood with old homes and public spaces from the 1830s. It shows how the landscape was used and changed in the 19th century.

Because of its history and unique features, Stevens Terrace was officially added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This means it's protected and its history is preserved for future generations.
