Stillbirth facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A stillbirth happens when an unborn baby dies while still inside the mother or dies during birth. When this happens, the baby is called stillborn. Stillbirth is different from a miscarriage. A stillbirth happens after the baby has been living inside its mother for 20 to 24 weeks, depending on the country. If the baby lived inside the mother for less time, it is called a miscarriage.

What is Stillbirth?

A stillbirth is a very sad event for families. It means a baby has died before or during its birth. This is different from a baby dying after birth. It is also different from a miscarriage, which happens much earlier in the pregnancy.

Stillbirth vs. Miscarriage

The main difference between a stillbirth and a miscarriage is how far along the pregnancy was.

  • A miscarriage happens when a baby dies in the early part of pregnancy. This is usually before 20 weeks.
  • A stillbirth happens when a baby dies later in pregnancy. This is usually after 20 to 24 weeks. The exact number of weeks can be different in various countries.

Remembering Stillborn Babies

Families who experience a stillbirth often find ways to remember their babies. This can include special ceremonies or places of remembrance. It helps them cope with their sadness.

Memorials Around the World

Different cultures have special ways to honor stillborn babies.

  • In Japan, people place statues of Jizo, a Buddhist god who protects children, to remember stillborn babies.
  • In some cemeteries, like the Angels' Plot in Ireland, there are special areas where stillborn babies can be buried. These places offer comfort to families.
