History of Stippville

Cherokee County, where Stippville is located, began to be settled in 1866. People soon discovered lots of coal there. Because of this, Cherokee County became the top coal-producing county in Kansas for many years.

Stippville grew into a mining town in the late 1800s. The Columbus Coal Company had a coal mine shaft right in Stippville. This mine was located along the Kansas City, Fort Scott & Memphis railway line.

By 1910, about 200 people lived in Stippville. The town even had its own post office. This post office had moved to Stippville from a nearby place called Newcastle in the 1880s.
