The Stock Pavilion is a historic building located on the campus of the University of Wisconsin–Madison in Madison, Wisconsin. It was built over a hundred years ago and has been an important part of the university's history.
History of the Stock Pavilion
The Stock Pavilion was built between 1908 and 1909. Its main purpose was to show off the university's farm animals, like cows and sheep. This helped students learn about agriculture and how to care for livestock.
Famous Visitors and Events
Over the years, the Stock Pavilion has hosted many different events. It wasn't just for animals! A famous musician named Sergei Rachmaninoff even held a concert there.
Several U.S. Presidents have also given speeches at the pavilion. These include Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Harry S. Truman. A very important civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr., also spoke at the Stock Pavilion. These events show how important the building has been to the community.
Becoming a Historic Place
Because of its long history and important events, the Stock Pavilion was recognized as a special building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. It was also added to the State Register of Historic Places in Wisconsin in 1989. This helps protect the building for future generations.
