Stone Hall is a very old and interesting house located in Cockeysville, Maryland. It sits on a large piece of land in Baltimore County, Maryland. This property was once part of an even bigger area called Nicholson's Manor.

This huge manor was first claimed by William Nicholson in 1719. Later, in 1754, the land was divided into smaller parts. One of these parts, a 360-acre farm, was bought by Thomas Gent in 1775.

Exploring Stone Hall's Past

Thomas Gent was an important person during the American Revolutionary War. He served as a colonel in the Baltimore Militia. He built the house known as Stone Hall on his farm.

How Stone Hall Grew Over Time

The house itself was built in different stages, starting a long time ago.

  • The first part was a 1.5-story stone building, finished before 1783.
  • Between 1783 and 1798, two more sections were added: a north wing and a south wing.
  • The main part of the house, a 2.5-story stone block with a pointed roof, was added at the north end.

In the past, when Stone Hall was a working farm, the first small stone building was likely used as a separate kitchen. Other small buildings on the property would have included living spaces for workers. After people were no longer forced to work, these buildings were still used by families who worked on the farm and shared the crops they grew.

More Recent Additions and Other Buildings

The very last part of the mansion, another 1.5-story stone addition, was built around 1930. This was probably after Garnet and Salina Hulings bought the property.

Besides the main house, there are other old buildings on the property. These include a barn, a carriage house (where horse-drawn carriages were kept), and a blacksmith shop. A blacksmith shop is where a person called a blacksmith would shape metal using heat and tools.

A Special Recognition

Because of its long history and interesting architecture, Stone Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history and should be protected.
