Strand was a small, unincorporated community located in Adams County, Iowa, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it wasn't officially a town or city with its own local government. It was more like a small settlement or neighborhood.

The Story of Strand

Adams County Iowa 1903
This map from 1903 shows where Strand, Iowa, was located.

The community of Strand was started by families who came from Norway. These Norwegian settlers began holding church services at the Strand Lutheran Church on May 21, 1875. This church is still active today, with people attending services. In 1998, the church had 121 members.

A post office opened in Strand in 1889. It helped people send and receive mail. However, the post office closed down around 1903 or 1909. This happened because of something called "rural free delivery." This new system meant mail was delivered directly to people's homes in the countryside, so they didn't need to go to a post office in a small community anymore.

There was also a store in Strand called the Lovig Store. It was open in the late 1800s. The store changed owners in 1895.

Strand was a very small place. In 1902, only 28 people lived there. By 1924, the population had dropped slightly to 25 people.

Even though Strand appeared on some maps in the early 1900s, the community slowly became smaller. Today, only the church and a cemetery remain from the original settlement.
