The neck has important blood vessels that carry oxygen to the brain.

Strangulation happens when something presses on the neck, stopping the flow of oxygen to the brain. This is a very serious situation because the brain needs a constant supply of oxygen to work properly. When the oxygen supply is cut off, a living being can first lose consciousness (pass out) and then, if the oxygen doesn't return, it can lead to death.

How the Body Works

Your brain is like the control center of your body. It needs a steady supply of oxygen to send messages and keep everything running, from thinking to breathing. Oxygen travels to your brain through special tubes called blood vessels in your neck. These vessels are very important for keeping you healthy and alert.

What Happens When Oxygen Stops?

If the flow of oxygen to the brain is stopped, even for a short time, it can cause big problems. Without oxygen, brain cells can't work. This quickly leads to a person or animal becoming unconscious. If the oxygen supply isn't restored very quickly, the brain can be permanently damaged, and it can even lead to death.

Animals in Nature

In the animal kingdom, some predators use a similar method to catch their prey. For example, big cats like cheetahs or lions might grab their prey by the neck. This helps them quickly stop the prey from moving, making it easier to hunt and get food. It's a natural part of the food chain in the wild.
