A Look Back: Strayhorn's History

Strayhorn actually became an official town in 1900, but it only stayed incorporated for about eight years. The first mayor of Strayhorn was Frank Bizzell. The community also had its own U.S. Post Office, and F. E. Cotton was the first postmaster. However, this post office closed in the 1960s, and mail delivery for Strayhorn was then handled by the Senatobia post office. Today, the Sarah post office serves the Strayhorn community.

Even after Strayhorn was no longer an official town, it still saw important changes in the first half of the 20th century. In 1932, a special canal was dug to drain water from the land. This helped turn land that couldn't be farmed into good farmland. Seven years later, in 1939, Strayhorn got its first electric lights, bringing modern convenience to homes and businesses. Then, in 1953, a paved highway was built right through the community, making travel much easier.
