Cultural Importance

The Kuku Yalanji people, who are the traditional owners of this land, have a special belief about Thornton Beach. They believe it's a place that helps bring about new life and growth. In the past, young women from the tribe would spend time at Thornton Beach. After this, they would go to an offshore island, like Struck Island. There, they would receive special cultural markings. These markings were an important part of their journey. They showed that the young women were growing up and ready for new responsibilities in their community.
