Early Life and Music
Stuart Braithwaite was born in Lanark, Scotland, and grew up in the countryside near the Clyde Valley. His family on his mother's side came from the Isle of Lewis. His father built telescopes and helped create the Sighthill stone circle in Glasgow. In 2013, Stuart helped raise money to protect these stones.
Growing up, Stuart listened to many different bands, including The Cure and Black Sabbath. When he was about 10 or 11, he got his first electric guitar and loved it right away. He went to Strathaven Academy from 1987 to 1993. Before Mogwai, Stuart was in a band called Deadcat Motorbike. He also played drums for another Scottish band called Eska for a while. Stuart has an older sister named Victoria.
Music Career
Starting Mogwai (1995)
Stuart met Dominic Aitchison in Glasgow in 1991. Four years later, in 1995, they formed the band Mogwai with their school friend Martin Bulloch.
Solo Work and Other Projects
In the early 2000s, Stuart played with a band called Mighty Joe Young Trio. He also performed solo acoustic shows. In 2002, he released an EP called The Sick Anchors with Aidan Moffat and Colin McPherson. Stuart is also a member of the British supergroup Minor Victories. A supergroup is a band made up of musicians who are already famous from other bands.
Film Appearances
In 2016, Stuart was in a documentary film called Lost in France. The film was about the music scene in Glasgow and a record label called Chemikal Underground. Stuart and other musicians, like members of Franz Ferdinand, went back to France to play a concert, just like they did when Mogwai was first starting out. The film shows Stuart playing Mogwai songs by himself and with other artists. It also includes interviews with him. The film was well-received and called "Funny, vital and sobering."
Writing a Book
In 2022, Stuart wrote a book about his life and music called Spaceships Over Glasgow: Mogwai, Mayhem and Misspent Youth. The book shares what it's really like to be in a successful band.
Musical Style
Stuart Braithwaite is known for using many effects pedals with his guitar. These pedals help him create unique, atmospheric sounds. His playing style focuses on creating beautiful melodies and changing how loud or soft the music is. This is typical of the post-rock style.
In 2021, a company in Denmark released a special guitar pedal named "Plasmatron." This pedal is Stuart Braithwaite's signature model, meaning it's designed to help other guitarists get sounds similar to his.
Personal Life
Stuart Braithwaite married musician Elisabeth Elektra in April 2019. He is a fan of the Celtic F.C. football team. Stuart is also a vegan, meaning he does not eat animal products.
