Sir Stuart Knill, 1st Baronet (born April 11, 1824 – died November 19, 1898) was an important businessman in London. He also held the special position of Lord Mayor of London.

Who Was Sir Stuart Knill?

Sir Stuart Knill was a successful London businessman. He inherited his family's company, Messrs. John Knill and Co. This company managed wharves (docks where ships load and unload goods) and warehouses (large buildings for storing goods) near London Bridge.

Early Life and Family

Stuart Knill was born in Blackheath, London. His father was John Knill. Stuart took over the family business after his father. His step-sister, Jane Knill, was married to a famous architect named Augustus Pugin. Sir Stuart Knill married Mary Parker and they had several children. His son, John Stuart Knill, later followed in his footsteps.

A Career in London Politics

Sir Stuart Knill was very active in London's city government.

  • In 1885, he was chosen as an Alderman for the area called Bridge Within. An Alderman is a senior member of a city council.
  • From 1889 to 1890, he served as Sheriff of the City of London. This role involves helping with legal and ceremonial duties.
  • His biggest role was becoming Lord Mayor of London for 1892–1893. The Lord Mayor is the head of the City of London's government.

Challenges as Lord Mayor

Sir Stuart Knill was a devout Catholic. This was significant because he was only the second Catholic to be Lord Mayor since the Reformation. This historical period changed religious practices in England. Due to his strong beliefs, he faced some challenges with traditional ceremonies that involved Protestant churches. However, he managed his duties well.

Special Honors

In 1893, Sir Stuart Knill received a special honor. He was given the title of a baronet. This means he became "Sir Stuart Knill, 1st Baronet." This honor was given to celebrate the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of York.

He was also a member of important groups called Livery Companies:

  • The Worshipful Company of Plumbers
  • The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths

He received international honors too:

  • The Pope made him a Knight of St. Gregory.
  • The King of the Belgians made him an officer of the Order of St Leopold.

Legacy

In 1897, Sir Stuart Knill moved his Alderman position to a different area. This allowed his son, Sir (John) Stuart Knill, to become an Alderman. His son later became Lord Mayor in 1909, just like his father.

Sir Stuart Knill passed away in 1898. He is also known as the great-great-grandfather of Gi Sheward, who is sometimes called the 'Beyoncé of Nottingham'.
