Early Life and Education
Stuart Turton grew up in Widnes, England. He studied English and Philosophy at the University of Liverpool. After college, he taught for a year in Shanghai. Then he became a journalist in London, writing about technology. Later, he moved to Dubai for three years to write about travel. He returned to London to start writing his first novel.

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle
Stuart Turton's first novel, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, was released in 2018. In the US, it was called The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. This book won the 2018 Costa Book Award for First Novel. It has been translated into 28 different languages. Over 200,000 copies have been sold in the UK alone. Stuart Turton once said that writing this book was "just awful" because it was so challenging!
This book also won Best Novel at the 2018 Books Are My Bag Readers' Awards. It was also considered for other big awards, like the Debut Book of the Year at the Specsavers National Book Awards. It was also longlisted for a New Blood Dagger and Gold Dagger at the Crime Writers' Association Awards.
The Devil and the Dark Water
Turton's second novel, The Devil and the Dark Water, was published in October 2020. This book won the 2020 Books Are My Bag Fiction Award. It was also considered for the Ian Fleming Dagger at the Crime Writers' Association Awards. Waterstones, a famous bookstore, chose it as their Thriller of the Month. It was also featured on a BBC Two TV show called Between the Covers. This book has been sold in 20 different countries.
The Last Murder at the End of the World
In November 2020, Stuart Turton signed a deal to write two more mystery novels. The first of these, The Last Murder at the End of the World, was released in 2024. He has described these new books as "nuts," meaning they are very exciting and unusual!
Books Adapted for TV
The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle TV Series
In December 2020, Netflix announced they had bought the rights to make The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle into a seven-part TV series. It was going to be made by House Productions, owned by BBC Studios. The series was planned to be written by Sophie Petzal. However, in January 2023, Netflix decided not to go ahead with the show.
The Devil and the Dark Water TV Series
In April 2021, the book The Devil and the Dark Water was also chosen to be made into a TV show by a company called Urban Myth. Howard Overman is set to write the show. Stuart Turton himself is involved as an executive producer, helping to guide the project.
