Stud poker facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Stud poker is a fun card game. It's a type of poker. In Stud poker, players get their own cards. They don't share cards with everyone. The goal is to make the best five-card hand. The player with the best hand wins the game.

Stud poker games do not use "community cards." These are cards shared by all players. Also, there are no "blinds." Blinds are forced bets made before cards are dealt. Instead, each player puts in a small amount of money first. This is called an "ante."

How Stud Poker Works

After everyone puts in their ante, cards are dealt. Each player gets two cards face down. These are called "hole cards." Then, each player gets one card face up. This card is visible to everyone.

Starting the Betting

In most Stud poker games, the player with the lowest card showing starts the betting. This first bet is called the "bring-in." It's usually a small amount. After the bring-in, play moves around the table. Players can choose to:

  • Fold: Give up their hand and leave the game.
  • Call: Match the current bet.
  • Complete: Make the bet larger, up to a set amount.

Once a player completes the bet, others can raise it. Raising means making the bet even bigger.

Betting Rounds

After the first round of betting, more cards are dealt. Each player still in the game gets another card face up. Now, the player with the best two cards showing starts the betting. This continues clockwise around the table. Players can fold, call, or raise again.

More cards are dealt one by one. Each time, there's another round of betting. The amount of money players can bet usually gets higher as more cards are dealt.

Streets in Stud Poker

Each round of betting has a special name. It's based on how many cards a player has.

  • After the first three cards are dealt, players are on "third street."
  • After the fourth card is dealt, they are on "fourth street."
  • This continues for "fifth street," "sixth street," and "seventh street."

Stud poker is often played as a "limit game." This means there are rules about how much players can bet or raise.

Types of Stud Poker

There are a few different ways to play Stud poker. The main difference is how many cards players get.

  • Five Card Stud: In this game, players get two cards face down. Then they get two cards face up. The last card, the fifth one, is dealt face down.
  • Seven Card Stud: This is a very common version. Players get two cards face down. Then they get four cards face up. The last card, the seventh one, is dealt face down.
