The first Stumptown cafe opened in 1999. Since then, the company has grown to include more cafes in Portland, as well as in cities like Seattle, New York, and Pasadena.

The Story of Stumptown Coffee
Stumptown and its founder, Duane Sorenson, are considered important figures in the "third wave of coffee" movement. This movement focuses on making high-quality coffee and treating it like a craft, similar to fine wine.
How Did Stumptown Change the Coffee World?
Sorenson and his team believed in working directly with coffee farmers. They would travel to farms around the world to find the best beans.
The company was known for paying very high prices for these beans. Sometimes, they paid three or four times the standard fair trade price. This helped support the farmers and encouraged them to grow excellent coffee. At one point, Sorenson set a world record for the highest price ever paid for coffee beans.
Stumptown also took good care of its employees. The company once paid for its workers' bands to record a music album. It also hired a full-time massage therapist for the staff. In 2006, Roast Magazine named Stumptown the "Roaster of the Year."
In 2015, the company was bought by Peet's Coffee.
Where Are Stumptown Cafes Located?
Stumptown has several cafes in its home city of Portland, Oregon. The company also has a roasting facility where they prepare all their coffee beans.
The very first Stumptown cafe on SE Division Street was once a hair salon. The salon was called "The Hair Bender." Stumptown used this name for one of its most famous espresso blends.
