What Makes Sturtevant Hall Special?
Sturtevant Hall is a big, red brick building. It has two and a half stories. The roof is shaped like a hip, which means it slopes down on all four sides. The building sits on a strong stone base.
Its Amazing Design
The most eye-catching part of the hall is its tall, four-story tower. This tower has an open bell area at the top. A pyramid-shaped roof covers the bell area. The main entrance to the building is at the bottom of this tower. Above the entrance, there is a set of three windows. On the third floor, you can see a special "Palladian" window. This type of window has a large arched middle section with smaller rectangular windows on each side.
The hall is mostly rectangular. It has two chimneys at each end. There are also dormer windows sticking out from the roof. These windows have their own small gabled roofs.
What Was Inside?
When John Calvin Stevens designed Sturtevant Hall, he made sure it had many useful rooms. Inside, there was a large assembly hall for gatherings. It also had a library full of books. There were seven classrooms for students to learn in. A science lab was included for experiments. Plus, there were studios for music and art.
A Bit of History
Hebron Academy is a very old school. It started way back in 1804. It is one of the oldest schools in the country that prepares students for college.
Why Was it Built?
By the 1880s, the school needed more space. Their old buildings were not big enough. So, the school started raising money to build new ones. A very generous person named Benjamin Sturtevant gave a lot of money. Sturtevant Hall is named after him. Another building, Sturtevant House (built in 1900), is also named in his honor.
The Architect
John Calvin Stevens was a very busy and important architect. He worked out of Portland. He designed Sturtevant Hall. He also designed three other buildings that are still on the Hebron Academy campus today.
