Ali Suat Hayri Ürgüplü (born August 13, 1903 – died December 26, 1981) was an important Turkish politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Turkey for a short time in 1965. He was also the last Prime Minister who was born outside of what is now modern Turkey. He was born in Damascus, which was part of the Ottoman Empire back then.
Early Life and Education
Suat Hayri Ürgüplü went to Galatasaray High School, a famous school in Turkey. He came from a well-known family of scholars and government officials in the Ottoman Empire. His father, Ürgüplü Hayri Efendi, was a respected religious leader. He also served as a minister for religious affairs.
Political Journey
Ürgüplü started his career as a judge. Later, he became a member of the Turkish Parliament in 1939. He held a position as the Minister of Customs and Public Monopolies from 1947 to 1948.
In 1961, he returned to the Parliament, joining the Senate. He became the chairman of the Senate from 1961 to 1963.
Becoming Prime Minister
In 1965, the government led by Premier İsmet İnönü ended. Suat Hayri Ürgüplü was then asked to form a new government. This new government was put together on February 5, 1965. It was a temporary government that served until the next elections on October 10. Even though it was a temporary government, it played an important role during that time.
Ürgüplü continued to be a member of the Senate until 1972.
Later Life and Passing
Suat Hayri Ürgüplü passed away on December 26, 1981, in Istanbul, Turkey. He was buried at the Edirnekapı Martyr's Cemetery.
