Subligna is a small place in Chattooga County, Georgia, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it is a group of homes and businesses that does not have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, the county government helps manage things there.
History
Subligna has an interesting past. It was first settled around 1848.
Early Days
A post office opened in Subligna in 1848. A post office is where people send and receive letters and packages. This post office served the community for many years. It finally closed down in 1953.
The name "Subligna" has a special meaning. It was chosen to honor an early settler named Dr. William Dunlap Underwood. The word "subligna" comes from Latin, an old language. In Latin, "subligna" means "under wood." This is a clever way to use the settler's last name, Underwood.
Becoming and Un-becoming a Town
In 1870, the Georgia General Assembly decided to make Subligna an official town. The Georgia General Assembly is the group of lawmakers for the state of Georgia. When they "incorporated" Subligna, it meant the community officially became a town with its own rules. These rules were written in something called a "municipal charter."
However, Subligna did not stay an official town forever. In 1995, the town's municipal charter was "repealed." This means the rules that made it an official town were taken away. So, Subligna went back to being an unincorporated community. It no longer had its own town government.
