Subroto Bagchi, born on May 31, 1957, is an Indian businessman. He is well-known for helping to start Mindtree, a large technology company in India.

Early Life and School
Subroto Bagchi grew up in Patnagarh, Odisha. His father, Makhan Gopal Bagchi, worked for the government. His mother was Labonya Prova Bagchi. Subroto went to Utkal University where he studied political science.
His Career Journey
Starting Out
Subroto Bagchi began his career in 1976 as a clerk. He worked in the Industries Department for the Government of Odisha. After one year, he became a management trainee at DCM in 1977. He worked there for five years.
Working in Computers
In 1981, Subroto joined the computer industry. He worked for many different computer companies until 1999. During this time, he handled sales, marketing, and operations. His longest time was at Wipro, another big technology company. He became the Chief Executive of Wipro's Global Research and Development. Later, he worked directly for the chairman, Azim Premji.
Co-founding Mindtree
In 1998, Subroto Bagchi left Wipro to work for Lucent Technologies. A year later, in 1999, he left Lucent. He then teamed up with nine other people to start Mindtree. When Mindtree began, Subroto Bagchi was its chief operating officer. Mindtree grew into a very successful global IT services company. It had over 20,000 employees and was listed on major stock exchanges in India.
Leadership Roles
In 2010, Subroto Bagchi was made the vice-chairman of Mindtree's board. On April 1, 2012, he became the chairman. He stepped down from this role in January 2016.
Serving the Government
On May 1, 2016, the Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, invited him to take on a new role. Subroto Bagchi became the full-time chairman of the Odisha Skill Development Authority. He held a high position, similar to a Cabinet Minister, and worked for a salary of just one rupee per year.
