Suddie's Past: From Clubhouse to Hospital
Suddie has an interesting history, changing from a fun spot for plantation owners to an important place for health. In the mid-1800s, there was a big building complex in Suddie. This building was a clubhouse where plantation owners from the Netherlands would relax. They enjoyed sitting on the porches and looking at the beautiful beach. Over time, this clubhouse became what we know today as the Suddie Hospital.
Farming and New Arrivals
Unlike other areas along the coast that grew cotton and sugar, Suddie was known for growing coffee and cocoa. It also produced honey! In 1835, many immigrants from Madeira, Portugal, came to Suddie. They worked on these coffee and cocoa farms and helped with honey production.
However, the working conditions were very tough, and many of the Portuguese workers faced difficulties. To help them, Governor Henry Lyte set up a special group in 1841 to look into their situation. This led to better living conditions for the workers. The Portuguese community then grew and became a big part of Suddie's development.
