Sue Hines is an Australian author who writes books for young people. She is also a radio presenter and an artist who paints with watercolours. Sue was born in London in 1959. She moved to Sydney, Australia, in 1966 when she was a child.

Early Life and School

Sue Hines finished high school at Cabramatta High School in Sydney. When she was 17, in 1976, she was on a TV talent show called Pot of Gold. She sang her own song, 'Newspapers', on the show. The next year, in 1977, Sue lived in Japan for a year as a foreign exchange student. This means she studied there and learned about a new culture.

Education and Teaching Career

Later, Sue studied at Macquarie University while raising her two young children. She started her teaching career in 1992 at Cherrybrook Technology High School. In the mid-1990s, she moved to Goulburn and then to Canberra. There, she taught English and English as a Second Language (ESL) at several high schools. In 2012, Sue moved to Mallacoota in East Gippsland. She taught part-time at Cann River P-12 College, which was the smallest school in the state.

Writing and Radio Work

Sue Hines has written three novels for young adults. She has also written short stories for younger readers. She has taught creative writing classes to high school students. Her first novel, Out of the Shadows, won an award in 1998. It was recognized as a great book for older readers. Since 2013, Sue has been a judge for the E.J. Brady Mallacoota Prize Short Story Competition. In 2016, Sue started working as a regular presenter on the local radio station 3MGB-FM.
