Years ago, Sugar Grove was a busy little place. It had its own school, a post office, and two stores where people could buy what they needed. There was even a facility for canning vegetables, and about one hundred families lived there.
Exploring Sugar Grove's Location and Roads
Sugar Grove is generally found where three roads meet: Bow Hill Road, Sugar Grove Road, and Elliots Creek Road. The main way to get into Sugar Grove is by using Craigs Mountain Road, also known as VA 674.
Getting around Sugar Grove can be an adventure! From Pilot Road (VA 615) to the end of Bow Hill Road, it's about six miles. More than half of this distance is a gravel road. For a long time, the roads in this area were not well maintained.
In 1999, the Virginia Department of Transportation finally paved some of the most difficult parts. This included one and a half miles of road that had steep drop-offs without guard rails, making it tricky for cars to pass each other safely.
