Sugartit is a place in Boone County, Kentucky, United States. It used to be a small, rural community. It was located where U.S. Route 42 and Kentucky Route 237 meet. This spot is between the cities of Florence and Union.

Sugartit is known for its very unusual name. The community no longer exists today. Most of its area has become part of Florence. The last building that was left was the Sugartit Asphalt factory.

What's in a Name?

The Story Behind "Sugartit"

Have you ever wondered how a place gets such a unique name? One story explains how Sugartit got its name. In the winter, local men would go to the general store. They spent a lot of time there because there was less farm work to do.

When they came home late for dinner, their wives would joke. They would say the men "had to have a sugar tit at the store." A "sugar tit" was a piece of cloth with sugar tied inside. Babies would suck on it to calm down. This funny saying stuck, and the community became known as Sugartit.

Other Names for the Community

Before it was called Sugartit, this area had other names. In 1883, it was known as Pleasant Ridge. Later, in the 1920s, it was called Gunpowder.

A Look Back: Sugartit's History

Early Days as Pleasant Ridge

In 1883, when the community was called Pleasant Ridge, it had several important services. There was a blacksmith shop where metal items were made and repaired. People could also visit a general store, which also sold paint.

The community had its own school, called Pleasant Ridge School. There was also a steam saw and grist mill. A grist mill is a place where grain is ground into flour.

Gunpowder in the 1920s

During the 1920s and later, the community was known as Gunpowder. At this time, it had a post office for sending mail. There was also a general store and a blacksmith shop. These businesses stopped operating sometime after the mid-1900s.

Changes in the Mid-1960s

By the mid-1960s, fewer businesses were left in the area. Only the Sugartit Asphalt Company and Haines Oil were still operating. This shows how the community was changing over time.

Sugartit Today

Since the 2000s, the area has seen a lot of new buildings. The city of Florence has grown, and its suburban areas have reached Sugartit. Today, the old Sugartit area is very different.

You can find many businesses along Route 42. These include fast-food restaurants, gas stations, and car washes. There are also banks, apartments, and a body shop. Other places like hardware stores, a church, and a pub are also there. A running store called Tri-State Running Company also has a shop in this area.

Sugartit was never officially made into an incorporated town. This means it never had its own local government like a city or town.
