The Story of Sula
How Sula Started
Sula began in 1960 in a place called San Pedro Sula, located in the Sula Valley of Honduras. It started as a special project with UNICEF, which is a big organization that helps children around the world. The main goal was to build a factory to make dairy products in northern Honduras.
Sula Joins Lacthosa
Later, in March 1992, a company called Lacthosa bought the Sula brand. Lacthosa had just been started by a Honduran businessman named Schucry Kafie. After Sula joined Lacthosa, the brand became even better! Lacthosa added many new products, like orange juice, other fruit juices, creams, and malts. They also invested in new, modern technology to make the products.
Sula's Products and Where They Go
What Sula Makes
Today, Sula makes many kinds of juice. You can find orange juice, apple juice, pineapple juice, guava juice, tamarind juice, and even peach, pear, and apple nectars. As of 2017, Sula is still a part of Lacthosa. It's the main brand that Lacthosa uses to sell its fruit juices and nectars.
Selling Products Around the World
Sula is often called the "flagship brand" of Lacthosa. This means it's one of their most important brands. Sula products are sold not only in Honduras but also in other countries in Central America and the United States.
In the mid-1990s, Sula started selling its products in Guatemala and El Salvador. Then, in September 2001, Lacthosa began selling Sula products in the U.S. market. They were able to do this after getting a special permit from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which makes sure food is safe.
In January 2015, Lacthosa invested $15 million to make even more juice. This helped them send their products to more international markets. Now, Sula products are exported to countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and the United States. In the U.S., you can mostly find them in Florida and Texas.
Lacthosa exports, mainly under the Sula brand, make up 70% of all dairy products and related items exported from Honduras! In the United States, Sula products are distributed by a company called Sula Food & Beverage Corporation.
Sula and Marca País Honduras
In October 2016, Sula joined a special program called Marca País Honduras. This program helps promote Honduras around the world. By being part of this, Sula can use the Honduras Brand stamp. This helps show that Sula is a proud Honduran company and encourages people to invest in, buy from, and visit Honduras.
