Sultana Suruzhon (also known as Sultana Souroujon) was a talented Bulgarian artist. She was a modernist painter, famous for her beautiful portraits. Early Life and Education

Sultana Suruzhon was born on May 12, 1900. Her family lived in a town called Novi Pazar in Bulgaria. She came from a Jewish family. Sultana had a younger brother named Leon Souroujon. He was 13 years younger than her. Leon also became famous later as a talented violinist.

Sultana loved art from a young age. She decided to study painting seriously. From 1921 to 1927, she attended the National Academy of Arts in Sofia. This is a very important art school in Bulgaria. At the academy, she learned from famous teachers. Tseno Todorov taught her about painting. Kharalampi Tachev taught her about design.

Art Career and Travels

After finishing her studies, Sultana Suruzhon became very active. She joined groups that worked for women's rights. These groups were part of the feminist movement. They wanted to make sure women had equal opportunities.

In 1938, Sultana decided to travel. She went to Paris, France, for a year. Paris was a very important city for artists at that time. Many new art styles were developing there. This trip likely helped her grow as an artist. After her time in Paris, she returned to Bulgaria.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1953, Sultana Suruzhon moved from Bulgaria to Israel. She continued to paint and show her art. After moving, her paintings were shown in many countries. She had exhibitions around the world.

Sadly, Sultana Suruzhon passed away in 1962. She died in a traffic accident in Bat Yam, Israel. Her art is still very important today. You can see her paintings in major art museums in Bulgaria. These include the National Art Gallery in Sofia. Her work is also displayed at the Plovdiv City Art Gallery.
