The center of the mall

Summit Mall is a large shopping center in Fairlawn, Ohio. It's a single-story mall, meaning it has one main floor. However, some of its biggest stores, like Macy's and Dillard's, have two floors.

A company called DeBartolo Corporation built the mall. It first opened its doors on October 28, 1965. Now, a different company, Simon Property Group, owns it. Summit Mall has over 100 stores and a place to eat called a food court. Some of the biggest stores there, known as anchor stores, are Macy's and two Dillard's stores.

History of Summit Mall

Summit Mall was planned in 1963 and opened in 1965. When it first opened, it had three main department stores: Halle Brothers Co., O'Neil's, and Polsky's. Other popular stores like Woolworth, Kroger, and Acme Markets were also there.

Changes to Anchor Stores

Over the years, the big anchor stores at the mall changed names or were replaced:

  • Halle Brothers Co. closed in 1982. Its spot was taken over by Higbee's. Later, in 1992, Dillard's moved into this space.
  • O'Neil's became May Company Ohio in 1989. Then, in 1993, it changed to Kaufmann's. Finally, in 2006, it became the Macy's store we know today.
  • After Polsky's closed, part of its space was used by a store called Jewel Mart. Later, Dillard's expanded into this area, creating a second Dillard's store focused on women's clothing.

Other Changes at the Mall

Summit Mall used to have a small movie theater. In 1989, the theater closed when a new, bigger movie theater opened nearby.

In recent years, some other stores have closed their locations at the mall. For example, Williams Sonoma closed in 2013, and Ann Taylor closed in 2017.
