Sumner got its name from an early settler named Moses Sumner. The community started to grow in the late 1800s.
Early Days and Growth
A post office opened in Sumner in 1885. This was an important step for the community. By 1891, about 100 people lived there. The community was becoming successful. Just one year later, in 1892, the population grew to 150 people.
Education in the Early 1900s
By 1898, Sumner had its own school. It was a small school with one teacher. Sixty-three students attended this school. In the late 1920s, Sumner's population reached 250 people. However, no railroad tracks passed through the community.
Changes Over Time
During the Great Depression, many people faced hard times. After World War II, more people started moving around. Because of these changes, many people moved away from Sumner. By 1983, Sumner still had a business, a school, a church, and a factory. In the year 2000, the population was 80 people.
