The Sumner-Carpenter House is a special old house located at 333 Old Colony Road in Eastford, Connecticut. It was built around 1806, making it over 200 years old! This house is a great example of a country home from the Federal period. It also has some smaller buildings that were added later in a style called Colonial Revival. Because it's so well-preserved and important, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Discover the Sumner-Carpenter House

The Sumner-Carpenter House sits in a quiet, rural part of Eastford. You can find it on the north side of Old Colony Road, close to where Bungee Brook crosses the road. It's a beautiful piece of history!

What Does the House Look Like?

The main part of the house is two and a half stories tall. It's made of wood and has a main section with a sloped roof. There's also a side part with a pointed roof that was likely built around the same time. Around 1900, a two-story wing was added to the back.

The front of the house is very interesting. It has five sections, with the main door in the middle. The door has wide windows on each side, called sidelights. Above the door, there's a rounded window and a decorative frame. The window right above the entrance is in a style called Palladian. This means it has a rounded window in the center, with two narrower windows on either side. Inside, the house still has many of its original features. Some parts that were very old and worn out have been carefully rebuilt to look just like they did before.

Who Built and Lived in This Historic Home?

The Sumner-Carpenter House was built around 1806. It was probably built by Vini Goodell, who also built another important house nearby, the Benjamin Bosworth House. The first owner of the house was John Newton Sumner.

This house is a wonderful example of a country home from the Federal period. It was once the center of a large and successful farm. One of the later owners, David Carpenter, lived here in the late 1800s. He was very involved in his community. He served as a town selectman, which is like a local leader, and also worked in the state legislature, helping to make laws for Connecticut. In the 1970s, the house was carefully restored to bring back its original look and feel.
