Sunil Kothari (born December 20, 1933 – died December 27, 2020) was a very important person in the world of Indian dance. He was a historian, a scholar, and a critic. This means he studied, wrote about, and reviewed different dance forms in India. He also taught dance at Ravindra Bharti University in Kolkata.
Sunil Kothari's Life and Work
Sunil Kothari studied a lot about dance. He earned his Master's degree in 1964 and his PhD in 1977. Even though he loved dance, he was also a chartered accountant by profession.
He started his writing career at The Times of India. He also taught at Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics. He wrote many articles and books as a freelance writer. He lived in Delhi for many years.

Sunil Kothari received many special awards for his work in dance. These awards showed how much he contributed to Indian classical dance.

- In 1961, he received the Kumar Chandrak award.
- In 1995, he was given the Sangeet Natak Akademi award. This award is for people who have made a big difference in Indian classical dance.
- In 2001, he received the Padma Shri award from the Indian government. This is one of the highest civilian awards in India.
- In 2012, he was awarded the Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak.
His Final Years
Sunil Kothari passed away on December 27, 2020. He was 87 years old. He died because of heart problems that were made worse by COVID-19.
