SuperDisk facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The LS-120, also known as SuperDisk, was a special type of computer disk and drive. It was designed to store much more data than the older 3.5-inch floppy disks. Think of it as a bigger, faster version of a floppy disk!

SuperDisk drives could read and write to their own 120 MB disks. They could also work with the older 1.44 MB floppy disks. This was a big advantage because people didn't need two different drives.

What is SuperDisk?

The SuperDisk was introduced in 1995. It was made to be a better option than the regular floppy disk. It could hold about 80 times more data than a standard floppy disk! This made it a "high-density" storage device.

How it Worked

SuperDisk diskettes had a special pattern etched onto them at the factory. This pattern helped the SuperDisk drive line up its read/write head very precisely. Because of this special alignment, a SuperDisk diskette could have many more tracks for data. It had 2,490 tracks, while a regular floppy disk only had 160. More tracks meant more space for your files!

Why it Didn't Last

Even though SuperDisk was a cool idea, it didn't become super popular. Other storage options, like the Zip drive, were also available. Some people found SuperDisks to be a bit slow or not always reliable compared to these other options.

Today, SuperDisk diskettes and drives are quite old. It can be hard to find them or get data off them if a drive stops working. Most people now use USB flash drives, external hard drives, or cloud storage for their files.
