Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Supreme Court of the Netherlands (called Hoge Raad in Dutch) is the highest court in the Netherlands. It's like the final referee for important legal cases about money, taxes, and other rules. This court was started on October 1, 1838, and you can find it in The Hague.

What Does the Supreme Court Do?

The Supreme Court makes sure that laws are used correctly. If someone disagrees with a decision from a lower court, they can ask the Supreme Court to look at their case. The court checks if the law was followed properly. Its decisions are final, meaning there are no more appeals after that.

Who Works at the Supreme Court?

The Supreme Court has 36 judges. This group includes a president, six vice presidents, and twenty-five regular judges. These regular judges are called raadsheren in Dutch, which means "Lords of the Council." There are also four special judges. All judges are chosen for their jobs for life. They stay in their roles until they decide to retire.
