The Supreme Junta of Caracas (also called Junta Suprema de Caracas) was a special government that ruled the area known as the Captaincy General of Venezuela. This happened after the main Spanish leader, Captain General Vicente Emparán, was forced to step down on April 19, 1810. This event was a big step towards Venezuela's independence from Spain.
The Supreme Junta governed until March 2, 1811. After that, the first congress of the First Republic of Venezuela was formed.
How the Supreme Junta Started
On April 19, 1810, a big change happened in Caracas. This day is known as the Revolution of April 19, 1810. The people of Caracas were unhappy with the Spanish officials. These officials had been chosen by Joseph Bonaparte, who was the brother of Napoleon and had taken over Spain.
The local government in Caracas grew bigger and decided to take charge. They called themselves the "Supreme Junta to Preserve the Rights of Ferdinand VII". This meant they claimed to be ruling Venezuela until the rightful Spanish King, Ferdinand VII, could return to power.
Seeking Support from Other Countries
One of the first things the new government did was to get support from other parts of Venezuela. They managed to get six other provinces to join them.
Then, they sent important people on special trips to other countries. These trips were called diplomatic missions. The goal was to get other nations to recognize their new government. They wanted these countries to agree that the Supreme Junta of Caracas was the true government of Venezuela.
- To London: Simon Bolivar, who later became a famous leader, traveled to London. He went with Luis Lopez Mendez and Andres Bello, who was their secretary. They left from La Guaira in June 1810.
- To the United States: Juan Vicente Bolívar Palacios, Simon Bolivar's brother, went to the United States. He traveled with Jose Rafael Revenga and Telesforo Orea. They were quite successful in getting the United States interested in supporting the Supreme Junta.
