Ambush facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

An ambush is a surprise attack. It's a military trick where soldiers hide and then suddenly attack an enemy who isn't expecting it. The enemy might be moving, like marching in a line, or they might have stopped. The main idea of an ambush is to use surprise to confuse the enemy. This confusion helps the attackers succeed.

Unlike other surprise attacks, an ambush usually isn't about taking over new land. Instead, it can be used to bother the enemy, or to capture or destroy important things like people, equipment, or supplies.

Ambushes in History

One of the earliest known ambushes happened in the year 9 AD (which means about 2,000 years ago). This was during the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. A Germanic leader named Arminius led his people in an ambush against three Roman legions. These Roman soldiers were led by Varus.

About 20,000 Roman soldiers were marching in a long line through a thick forest. The Germanic fighters attacked them by surprise. The battle lasted for days, and in the end, the Roman army was completely defeated. This was a huge win for the Germanic people. It was not just a military victory, but also a big psychological victory, showing that the powerful Romans could be beaten.
