Forming the Band
Survivor was formed in 1978 by guitarist and songwriter Jim Peterik and guitarist Frankie Sullivan. They wanted to create a band with a strong rock sound. They soon added singer Dave Bickler, bassist Dennis Johnson, and drummer Gary Smith. The band quickly started writing and performing their own music.
Early Albums and Sound
In 1979, Survivor released their first album, which was named after the band. Their music was known for its strong melodies and powerful vocals. They mixed elements of arena rock and hard rock. This style helped them gain fans and get noticed in the music world.
Eye of the Tiger: A Global Hit
The band's biggest success came in 1982 with the song Eye of the Tiger. This song was chosen by actor Sylvester Stallone for his movie Rocky III. Stallone heard their music and asked them to write a theme song for the film. The song became a massive hit around the world.
Impact of the Song
Eye of the Tiger reached number one on the music charts in many countries. It stayed at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U.S. for six weeks. The song also won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Its powerful lyrics and exciting beat made it an anthem for sports and motivation.
Changes in the Band
After the success of Eye of the Tiger, the band continued to release new music. In 1984, Jimi Jamison joined Survivor as the new lead singer. He sang on many of their other popular songs, including High on You and The Search Is Over. These songs also did very well on the charts.
Later Years and Reunion
Survivor continued to release albums and tour through the 1980s. They took a break in 1989 but reunited in 1993. Since then, different members have joined and left the band. However, Frankie Sullivan has always been a key part of Survivor. The band continues to perform their classic hits for fans today.
