Susan Price (born 8 July 1955) is an English author who writes books for children and young adults. She has won two important awards for her books: the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Prize. These awards celebrate the best children's books in Britain.

Susan Price was born in Dudley, a town in England. This area, known as the Black Country, greatly influenced her stories. She grew up in a working-class family. She started writing her first books while working jobs like stacking supermarket shelves.

She has written more than 60 books during her career.

Susan Price's Books

Many of Susan Price's books are fantasy stories. These include science fiction and ghost stories. She also writes historical novels, which are stories set in the past. Some of her books are about animals or everyday life. She has also retold many tales from folklore in her short stories.

The Ghost Drum

Her first book in the Ghost World series, The Ghost Drum, was published in 1987. This book is an original fairy tale. It uses ideas from Russian history and Russian folklore. The Ghost Drum won the Carnegie Medal. This award is given to the best children's book by a British subject each year. The book was reissued in 2024 and was called a "rediscovered gem."

The Sterkarm Handshake Series

In The Sterkarm Handshake (1998) and its sequel A Sterkarm Kiss (2003), Susan Price explores time travel. The story brings together a young anthropologist from 21st-century Britain and a young warrior from 16th-century Scotland. They fall in love, and the anthropologist decides to help his border clan. This clan is in conflict with a large company from the 21st century. For The Sterkarm Handshake, Susan Price won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize. This is a special award judged by other British children's writers.

The Pagan Mars Trilogy

The Pagan Mars trilogy (2005–2008) is also known as the Odin or Mars series. These books are set in a scientifically advanced alternative world. In this world, the pagan gods are still worshipped. Also, a form of slavery, called bondery, is common.
