About Susan Sex's Art Journey
Early Life and Inspiration
Susan Sex was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1947. She taught herself how to paint. She loved wild flowers from a young age. This love for nature inspired her to become an artist.
She has a special connection with the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, Dublin. She has painted many of the amazing tropical orchids found there.
Award-Winning Art
Susan Sex is very interested in the wild orchids that grow in Ireland. Her detailed paintings of these flowers have won her many awards.
- She won Gold Medals from the Royal Horticultural Society in London. She received these awards in 2000, 2001, and 2002.
- In 2010, she also won the Jill Smythies Award from the Linnean Society of London. This award is given for excellent botanical art.
In 1996, Susan Sex had her own art show at the National Botanic Gardens. All of her paintings at this show were sold!
Stamps and Books
Besides her paintings, Susan Sex has also created designs for postage stamps. In 2006, she designed a collection of stamps for An Post, which is Ireland's postal service.
- One collection was called Wild Flowers Of Ireland.
- She also designed four native trees for the Flora and Fauna series of stamps.
Susan Sex also helped write a book with Brendan Sayer. The book is called Wild Irish Orchids. It shares her knowledge and beautiful art of these special flowers.
