Susana Marcos Celestino, born on September 25, 1970, is a Spanish scientist. She studies how our eyes see and how light works. She's a leader in creating new ways to look at the eye. She has helped develop special lenses for inside the eye. These lenses can help people see better. She also works on finding eye infections.

A cool thing she did was help create a special visual simulator. This tool lets doctors test how new lenses will work before surgery. It's especially helpful for people with presbyopia (when eyes have trouble focusing up close) or cataracts. This simulator comes from a company she helped start, called 2EyesVision. In July 2021, she became a director at the Center for Visual Science. This center is part of the University of Rochester in the United States.

Susana Marcos's Education

Susana Marcos went to the University of Salamanca in her hometown. There, she earned her master's and then her Ph.D. in Physics. She received a special award for her Ph.D. work. This work was done at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). Her teacher and mentor for her Ph.D. was scientist Pablo Artal. After her Ph.D., she continued her training in Europe and the United States.

What Susana Marcos Does

Susana Marcos Celestino's main work is creating tools. These tools help doctors diagnose and fix eye problems. She focuses on making instruments for ophthalmology, which is the study of eye health.

Early Career and Research

From 1993 to 1996, Susana Marcos was a research fellow. She worked at the Institute of Optics in Madrid, Spain. This institute is part of the CSIC. Then, from 1997 to 2000, she was a postdoctoral researcher. She worked at the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston, USA. This institute is part of Harvard Medical School.

In 2000, Susana Marcos returned to Spain. She joined the CSIC again. She started as a senior scientist and later became a research professor. In 2005, she became a lead scientist at the CSIC. She started her own research group at the Institute of Optics. By 2006, she was a full professor of research at the CSIC. In 2008, she became the director of the Institute of Optics "Daza de Valdés." She led the institute until 2012.

Awards and Recognition

Susana Marcos Celestino has received many important awards. She won the King Jaime Prize in New Technologies. She also received the Physics, Innovation and Technology Prize. This award came from the Royal Spanish Society of Physics. She won the Adolph Lomb Prize from Optica. She also received the ICO Prize from the International Optics Commission. In 2019, she was given the 'Leonardo Torres Quevedo' National Award for engineering. In 2023, she received the Edwin H. Land Medal. This award recognized her amazing work in eye diagnosis and correction. Her work has helped millions of patients around the world.

Inventions and Patents
