The Story of Sutliff's Beginnings
Sutliff was founded because of a special way people used to cross the Cedar River. This was a ferry service.
Who Started the Ferry?
The ferry was started around 1838 or 1840 by a man named Allen C. Sutliff. He was an important person in the area. His younger brother, Milton Sutliff, later became a judge in Ohio.
How Sutliff Got Its Name
The community was named after Allen C. Sutliff because he operated the ferry. This ferry helped people and goods cross the river, making the area a useful stopping point.
A New Name for the Community
Later, Allen Sutliff sold his ferry business to another person named Jim McLellan. Jim had a nickname, "Butts." Because of this, the community was sometimes called "Buttsville."
The Famous Sutliff Bridge
Sutliff is well-known for its historic bridge. This bridge is very important and is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Bridge's History and Damage
The Sutliff Bridge has been a key landmark for many years. However, it was badly damaged during a big flood in 2008, known as the Iowa Flood of 2008. This flood caused a lot of destruction in the area.
Rebuilding the Sutliff Bridge
After the flood, the bridge was closed for four years. It needed a lot of work to be safe again. Funding from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) helped pay for the repairs. The Johnson County Board of Supervisors approved the project.
The reconstruction was managed by VJ Engineering. Iowa Bridge and Culvert of Washington, Iowa, did the actual building work. In October 2012, a special ceremony was held to celebrate the bridge reopening to the public.
Local Life in Sutliff
The main public business in Sutliff is Baxa's Sutliff Store & Tavern. This store has been a part of the community for a very long time.
A Historic Local Business
Baxa's Sutliff Store has been standing next to the Historic Sutliff Bridge since 1899. It serves as a central gathering place for the community.
