Suze Robertson's Life Story
Suze Robertson was born into a family who were merchants. Her mother died when Suze was only two years old. Her aunt and uncle then raised her.
Early Art Training
Suze showed a talent for drawing from a young age. In 1874, she started studying art. She went to the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. There, she learned from a teacher named Jan Philip Koelman. She won several medals for her work there.
In 1876, she also took drawing lessons. These lessons were at the Polytechnical School in Delft.
Becoming a Professional Artist
Until 1882, Suze taught drawing to girls in Rotterdam. On Sundays, she continued her own art lessons. She learned from Petrus van der Velden in The Hague. After this, she decided to become a full-time artist.
Her paintings often showed simple people. She painted them in farmhouses. She also showed scenes of farm life. Her style was similar to Van Gogh's early work. For example, his painting The Potato Eaters. People say that Suze and Van Gogh admired each other's art.
Marriage and Exhibitions
In 1892, Suze married a painter named Richard Bisschop. She also joined two important art groups. These were the Pulchri studio and Arti et Amicitiae.
Over the next few years, Suze showed her art widely. She won several awards. This included a bronze medal in 1900. This was at a big world fair called the Exposition Universelle (1900).
In 1907, her art was shown at a new art gallery. She sold paintings for a lot of money. This was a record amount at the time. Suze Robertson passed away in The Hague.
