Swallows, Colorado facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Swallows is the name of an old, now empty, town in Pueblo County, Colorado. It's known as a "ghost town" because no one lives there anymore.

What Was Swallows?

Swallows was once a small community in the U.S. state of Colorado. It's officially listed as a "populated place" by the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), even though it's no longer active.

Why Was It Called Swallows?

The town got its unique name from the actual swallow birds! These birds used to build their nests very close to where the town was first built. Imagine a town named after the birds flying around it!

When Was Swallows Active?

Swallows had its own post office, which is a big sign that it was a real community. The post office first opened in 1892. It stayed open for many years, helping people send and receive letters, until it finally closed in 1947. After the post office closed, the town slowly became empty, turning into the ghost town it is today.
