Sxeʼxnʼx facts for kids
The Sxeʼxnʼx (pronounced like "Skh-ee-kh-nx") are a group of First Nations people. They live in the Lower Nicola Valley, which is in the southern part of British Columbia, Canada.
The Sxeʼxnʼx are part of a larger group called the Nlaka'pamux people, also known as the Thompson people. They are closely connected to the Scw'exmx, who are a main part of the Nlaka'pamux people and speak the Nlakapamuxtsin language.
Their main community is called Shackan, or sometimes Lower Nicola. This community is located just west of a town called Merritt. The name "Shackan" actually comes from "Scw'ex," which is the name of the Nicola River.
Who Represents the Sxeʼxnʼx People?
The Sxeʼxnʼx people have their own government, which is called the Shackan Indian Band. This band government is a member of a larger group called the Nicola Tribal Association. This association helps different First Nations bands work together on common goals.
