Scwʼexmx Tribal Council facts for kids
The Scwʼexmx Tribal Council is a group of First Nations communities in British Columbia, Canada. It used to be called the Nicola Tribal Association. This council helps different First Nations bands work together. These bands are located in the Nicola Valley, Thompson Canyon, and Fraser Canyon areas.
The Scwʼexmx Tribal Council is one of three main councils for the Nlakaʼpamux (also known as Thompson) people. The other two are the Nlakaʼpamux Nation Tribal Council and the Fraser Canyon Indian Administration. Some First Nations, like the Lytton First Nation and Lower Nicola Indian Band, are not part of any of these three councils.
In 2009, a Canadian government department called Indian & Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) changed how it funded Tribal Councils. They wanted to send money directly to the First Nations communities instead of through the councils. This meant that Tribal Councils had to adapt to new ways of working and getting support.
