He studied at Aligarh and earned degrees in law. He then went on to get special doctorates from universities in Germany (Erlangen and Heidelberg) and from Oxford University in England. Dr. Zafarul Hasan was the first Muslim scholar from the Indian subcontinent to earn a PhD in Philosophy from Oxford. His PhD paper, called Realism, is a very important work on the topic. Famous thinkers and educators, like his teacher Professor John Alexander Smith and Allama Mohammad Iqbal, praised his work.
He began teaching at Aligarh Muslim University in India in 1911. In 1913, he became a philosophy professor at Islamia College in Peshawar. From 1924 to 1945, he taught philosophy again at Aligarh Muslim University. There, he also led the Philosophy Department and was the Dean of the Arts Faculty.
