Syenite is a small, unincorporated community located in the southern part of St. Francois County in the U.S. state of Missouri. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Syenite is found west of U.S. Route 67, a major road. The community of Knob Lick is about 1.5 miles to the east. The St. Francis River valley is to the north and west of Syenite, and Knob Lick Mountain is about one mile to the south-southeast.

The Story of Syenite

The community of Syenite got its name from a type of rock also called syenite. This area was once important for mining this rock. A post office was opened in Syenite in 1881, which helped people send and receive mail. It stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1914.

What is Syenite Rock?

Syenite is a type of igneous rock. This means it formed when hot, molten rock, called magma, cooled down and became solid. Syenite looks a bit like granite, but it has less quartz. It often contains minerals like feldspar and hornblende. Because it's a strong and attractive rock, syenite has been used in building and construction for a long time.
