Sylke Tempel (born May 30, 1963 – died October 5, 2017) was a talented German writer and journalist. She was well-known for her work in understanding and explaining foreign policy, which is how different countries interact with each other. At the time of her passing, she was the main editor, called the editor-in-chief, of a special magazine about foreign policy called Internationale Politik. She had held this important role since 2008.

Her Early Life and Education
Sylke Tempel was born in a town called Bayreuth in Bavaria, a region in Germany. She loved learning and studied many subjects at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Munich. These subjects included history, which is the study of the past, and political science, which is about how governments work. She also studied Jewish studies.
After her studies in Germany, she received a special scholarship to go to New York City in the United States. She lived there from 1989 to 1991. Later, she earned her PhD, which is a very high university degree, from Bundeswehr University Munich.
Her Career as a Journalist
Sylke Tempel started her career as a journalist in 1993. A journalist is someone who gathers and reports news. She worked in Israel as a Middle East correspondent. This meant she reported on events happening in the Middle East region.
While working there, she covered many important events. These included the Oslo I Accord, which was a peace agreement, and the Intifada, which refers to periods of Palestinian uprising. She also reported on the sad assassination (the murder of an important person) of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995.
Sylke Tempel wrote for several well-known magazines and newspapers, such as Profil, Facts, and Der Tagesspiegel. She also wrote many books for young people, known as young adult novels. These books were published by Rowohlt Berlin.
From 2008 until her death, she was the editor-in-chief of Internationale Politik. This magazine is published by the German Council on Foreign Relations, a group that helps people understand international issues. In 2003, she received a special award called the Quadriga award for her work.
Remembering Sylke Tempel
Sylke Tempel lived in Berlin with her partner. Sadly, she passed away on October 5, 2017, during a big storm called Storm Xavier. She was 54 years old when a falling tree hit her in Tegel, Berlin. She is buried in Friedhof Heerstraße in Berlin.
After her death, the German-Israeli Future Forum Foundation created a special program in her honor. They named their Sylke Tempel Fellowship after her. A fellowship is a grant for a person to pursue studies or research. This was done with the support of important figures like Sigmar Gabriel and Tzipi Livni.
