History of Sylvan Grove
The Sylvan Grove Church and Cemetery
The Sylvan Grove Church and its cemetery are located north of Kylertown. You can find them on Church Hill Road, just off State Route 1011. This church stands as a reminder of the strong faith of the first people who settled here.
The current church building was finished in 1870. It cost $2010.00 to build. The land for the church was owned by John and Wealthy Johnson Hoover. They gave the land to the Trustees of the Methodist-Episcopal Church. The trustees at that time were Robert Daugherty, George Hess, David Aldrich, Samuel Hoover, and John Hoover. The church officially opened on June 25, 1871.
The First Church Building
The church built in 1870 was actually the second church in this area. The very first church was a log building constructed in 1850. This makes it the first church ever built in what later became Cooper Township.
This original log church was across the road from where the current church stands today. Two of the Hoover brothers, Samuel and John, bought the land for this first church from Edward and David Gratz. They then gave one acre of this land to the Morris Township School District. This log building was used for both school lessons and church services.
The people who helped start this first log church were all four Hoover brothers: John, Samuel, George, and Jerimiah. Robert Daugherty and George Hess also helped establish it.
