Sylvia Cassedy was born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 29, 1930. She went to Brooklyn College. After college, she worked as a teacher for both younger and older students.
Cassedy became well-known for her novels written for young adults. Her books often featured young girls as the main characters. These girls would use their imagination and play to make their lives better. Some of her famous novels include Behind the Attic Wall, M.E. and Morton, and Lucie Babbidge's House.
Besides her novels, Sylvia Cassedy also wrote two books of poetry. She even translated a collection of poems from countries like India and Japan.
