Syr Hywel y Fwyall was a brave Welsh knight. His name means 'Hywel of the Battleaxe'. He lived a long time ago, in the 1300s. People remember him as a hero from Wales. He was also known as Sir Hywel ap Gruffydd.

His Family Background

Hywel came from a well-known Welsh family. His father was Gruffydd ab Howel. Some stories say he was related to Collwyn ab Tangno. Collwyn was an important lord in parts of Wales. These areas included Eifionydd, Ardudwy, and Llŷn.

A Brave Fighter at Poitiers

Hywel was one of many Welsh soldiers. They fought in a big battle called the Battle of Poitiers. This battle happened in France in 1356. Welsh stories say Hywel was very brave. They even claim he captured the King of France, John II of France. The legend says he cut off the king's horse's head with one powerful blow!

Rewards for His Bravery

Hywel fought so well that he was made a knight. Edward the Black Prince gave him this special honor. After the battle, Hywel received many rewards.

  • He became the Constable of Criccieth Castle in 1359. This meant he was in charge of the castle.
  • He was given money from the Dee Mills in Chester.
  • He also received other important things in North Wales.

The Axe Ceremony

As a special thank you, a unique ceremony was created for Hywel. A large meal was served in front of his battleaxe forever. After the ceremony, the food was given to poor people. This was done to honor Hywel's spirit. This tradition continued for many years. It is said to have lasted until the time of Elizabeth I. Eight helpers were paid to look after the meal.

Later Life and Family

Hywel also worked as a "raglot" or bailiff. This was like a local official. He worked in a place called Aberglaslyn. He passed away around 1381. He had two sons, Meredydd and Dafydd. Meredydd lived in Eifionydd. Dafydd lived near Llanrwst.

A famous Welsh poet, Iolo Goch, wrote about Hywel's family. He mentioned Hywel's wife, Tanglwst. They had a son named Gruffydd. Many families in Eifionydd are related to Hywel's older brother, Einion.
