Tõnis Mägi (born on November 18, 1948, in Tallinn) is a famous Estonian singer, guitarist, composer, and actor. He is known as one of the most important and memorable figures in Estonian rock music over the last 40 years. More recently, he has also been involved in politics.

Early Life and Music Beginnings
Tõnis Mägi grew up in a family that loved music. He became interested in music from a very young age. When he was a student at Tallinn 22nd High School (now Jakob Westholm Gymnasium), he started singing as a soloist in the school choir.
After learning to play the guitar, Mägi began his music career. He played guitar in school bands like Juuniorid (in 1965) and Rütmikud (in 1966). After serving in the army, he became the lead singer for the band Baltika. Later, he sang with other popular bands such as Kärjed, Laine, Muusik Seif, 777, and Ultima Thule.
Music Career Highlights
In the 1970s and 1980s, Tõnis Mägi became very popular. His fame spread not only in Estonia but also across the entire Soviet Union. One of his most well-known songs, Olimpiada-80, became a special song for the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
In 1987, he performed his last concert in Russia. After that, he returned to Estonia. He then focused on supporting the Singing Revolution. This was a time when Estonians used music to peacefully protest for their freedom. Mägi's song Koit (which means Dawn in Estonian) became a symbol of hope and freedom during this period.
Since 1996, Tõnis Mägi has also worked at the Vanemuine theatre in Tartu.
Involvement in Politics
In January 2007, Tõnis Mägi joined the political party Estonian Greens. He ran as a candidate in the Estonian parliamentary election that same year. He received 1215 votes in that election.
Over time, Tõnis Mägi has shared his thoughts on various political topics. He has expressed support for the Conservative People's Party of Estonia.
He performed at a concert after an Independence Day march. This march was organized by a youth group called Blue Awakening. He also encouraged people to vote for Henn Põlluaas in the 2021 presidential elections.
On April 22, 2017, Tõnis Mägi spoke out against the Rail Baltic project. This project aims to build a new railway line connecting the Baltic States with the rest of Europe.
On October 23, 2021, Tõnis Mägi performed in Tallinn during a public gathering. He had previously encouraged people to attend this event. He has also received some criticism for his views on certain health measures.
Awards and Honors
Tõnis Mägi has received several important awards for his contributions. In 1999, the President of Estonia honored him with the IV Class Order of the White Star. Later, in 2010, he received the III Class Order of the National Coat of Arms. These awards recognize his significant impact on Estonian culture.
Personal Life
Tõnis Mägi met his first wife, Virve, when he was still a student. In 1980, he married actress and dancer Laine Mihelson-Adamson. They had a daughter named Liis-Katrin, who was born in 1983. They later divorced in 1988.
In the same year, he met his third wife, Piia. They moved to Sweden together. After Piia's passing, Mägi raised their daughter, Maarja (born 1992), by himself.
Currently, Tõnis Mägi is married to singer Kärt Johanson. They have two daughters together: Liidia (born in 1999) and Mirt (born in 2004). Tõnis Mägi's daughter from his second marriage, Liis-Katrin, is married to actor Märt Avandi.
