Türkân Akyol (born October 12, 1928 – died September 7, 2017) was an important Turkish politician, doctor, and university professor. She made history by becoming the first woman government minister in Turkey. She was also the first woman to be a university rector (the head of a university) in Turkey.
Early Life and Education
Türkân Akyol was born in Istanbul, Turkey, on October 12, 1928. Because her father was a staff officer, her family moved a lot. She went to primary school in different parts of Turkey. In 1947, she graduated from the Erenköy Girls High School in Istanbul.
Türkân Akyol then studied Medicine at Ankara University. She graduated in 1953. She became a doctor who specialized in pulmonology. This is the study of lungs and breathing problems.
Academic Career
After becoming a doctor, Türkân Akyol continued her studies at Ankara University. She became an assistant professor in 1965. This is a university teacher who is on their way to becoming a full professor. In 1970, she became a full professor. Between 1959 and 1965, Akyol also studied in the United States, France, and the Netherlands.
In 1980, Türkân Akyol was chosen to be the rector of Ankara University. This made her the first female rector in Turkey's history. She worked in this role until 1982. She left because she disagreed with the Council of Higher Education. This council oversees universities in Turkey.
She continued teaching at the university until 1983. Then, a politician named Erdal İnönü asked her to help start a new political group. This group was called the Social Democracy Party (SODEP). Akyol became a deputy chairman of this party.
Political Career
On March 25, 1971, Türkân Akyol was chosen to be the Minister of Health and Social Security. She joined the government led by Nihat Erim. This made her the first woman to be a government minister in Turkey. On December 13, 1971, she left this job and went back to teaching at the university.
Türkân Akyol later became a member of the parliament. She was elected as a deputy (representative) for Izmir Province in the 1987 general election. After her time in parliament ended in 1991, she returned to her university teaching job.
In 1992, she was appointed Minister of State. This role meant she was in charge of Woman and Family Affairs. She served in the government led by Süleyman Demirel. In 1993, she became a minister again. This time, she worked in the government of Tansu Çiller, who was Turkey's first woman prime minister.
Türkân Akyol passed away in a hospital in Ankara on September 7, 2017. She was 88 years old. She was buried at the Karşıyaka Cemetery after a religious funeral at Maltepe Mosque. She had two children.
Legacy
There is a hospital in Bursa that is named after her.
